Best of the East

Best of the East is a monthly gallery that features some of the top photojournalism made by AP staff photographers, freelancers and members based in AP’s 10-state U.S. East region.

A new day beautifully breaks in Boothbay, Maine and a lobsterman heads out of the harbor, leaving a rippling wake behind.

A homeless heroin addict in Philadelphia participates in a program to receive a valid photo ID, eliminating one of the barriers to entering a drug treatment center.

Violence by police, toward police and in national politics also dominated headlines.

A failing subway system and a July 4th tradition added to New York City’s woes and pleasures.

And peak action in soccer, baseball and boxing round out July’s selection from the East.

This gallery was curated by Jacqueline Larma, Regional Photo Editor/East for the Associated Press.
