Best of the East

Best of the East is a monthly gallery that features some of the top photojournalism made by AP staff photographers, freelancers and members based in AP’s 10-state U.S. East region.

This month’s selection of noteworthy images begins with the commemoration at ground zero on the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, shot this year by New York staffer Seth Wenig.

Philadelphia-based  photographer Matt Rourke captured the contentious nature of the national anthem before an NFL game.

Staff photographer Julio Cortez photographed prisoner Eric Kelley reacting after being granted a retrial in Paterson, NJ

In a rare opportunity, Boston-based Steven Senne traveled to Nantucket to photograph Chelsea Manning, a former U.S. Army intelligence analyst who spent time in prison for sharing classified documents.

September in New York also means fashion season with staffers Mary Altaffer, Kathy Willens and Bebeto Matthews there at the runway and behind the scenes.

Bill Cosby appeared in court as changes occur to his legal team, causing a delay in his retrial.

Baseball and college football are a mainstay of September coverage with staffers John Minchillo, Frank Franklin, Keith Srakocic, Matt Slocum and freelancer Chris Knight making the memorable images.

ZipRider-ing through New Hampshire fall foliage and marathon racing inside Boston’s Fenway Park were shot by staffers Bob Bukaty and Michael Dwyer.

The galley ends with pictures at dawn by staffer Julio Cortez and Bob Bukaty at very different vantage points in the East region.

This gallery was curated by Jacqueline Larma, Regional Photo Editor/East for the Associated Press.
