Day 24: Scenes of resistance from the war in Ukraine

In a basement converted into a nursery Nanny Svitlana Stetsiuk plays with one of nineteen babies in Ukraine's capital city of Kyiv. The babies, born to surrogate mothers are cared for while their biological parents remain outside the country due to the war against Russia. 

In the western city of Lviv, Ukraine’s cultural capital, which was hit by Russian missiles on Friday, military veterans were training dozens of civilians on how to handle firearms and grenades.

“It’s hard, because I have really weak hands, but I can manage it,” said one trainee, 22-year-old Katarina Ishchenko. 

Tattoo artists prick clients with patriotic symbols and volunteerism has seized the city where people sort through donated clothes for later distribution among internally displaced people. 

On Day 24 of the war, more air raids sent families and hospitals staff to gather in basement bomb shelters.
