Best of the East

Best of the East is a monthly gallery that features some of the top photojournalism made by AP staff photographers, freelancers and members based in AP’s 10-state U.S. East region.  

This month’s selection begins outside of Philadelphia, on the day Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial was declared a mistrial. 

A profile of 80-year-old Richard Petty included him signing autographs for fans at a sponsor's event during the NASCAR Cup Series Pocono 400 auto race weekend in Long Pond, Pa. 

In New York,  high school students at Ballet Tech rehearse "The Jig Is Up," at the Joyce Theater.

A commuter exits a closed off station after a subway train derailment in the Harlem neighborhood of New York. A subway train derailed near a station in Harlem on Tuesday, frightening passengers and resulting in a power outage as people were evacuated from trains along the subway line.

In an ongoing project covered in Philadelphia and New York, four children from Tanzania return trip to the US and are refitted with new prosthesis for their growing bodies. The four, all albinos, lost limbs to attackers who believe body parts from albinos hold magical powers.

Baseball is in full swing while football training camps are building toward the start of pre-season play in August.
