AP monthly photo contest

Each month The Associated Press honors photographers for outstanding coverage while on assignment.

The winners for the September 2022 AP Photo Contest are Alexander Zemlianichenko for News Photography Single Image, for his photo of Irina Virganskaya, daughter of former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, saying goodbye to him for the last time during his funeral at Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow, Russia.

Kirsty Wigglesworth for News Photography Story, for her coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Matias Delacroix for Feature Photography Single Image, for his photo of a salt collector working the salt flats of Pampatar at sunrise on Margarita Island, Venezuela.

Andreea Alexandru for Feature Photography Story, for her coverage of the Romula Fest historic reenactment event in Romania.

Manu Fernandez for Sports Photography Single Image, for his photo of Real Madrid's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois looking at the ball during the Spanish La Liga soccer match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid, Spain.

Ashley Landis for Sports Photography Story, for her coverage of girls flag football in California.
