AP monthly staff photo contest

Each month The Associated Press honors photographers for outstanding coverage while on assignment.

The winners for the October 2021 AP Photo Contest are Felipe Dana for News Photography Single Image, for his photo of a man standing inside a room where a committee of local elders judge an incident and determine the verdict, in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Emilio Morenatti for News Photography Story, for his story of ash from a volcano covering the town as it continues to erupt on the Canary island of La Palma, Spain.

Dar Yasin for Feature Photography Single Image, for his photo of an Indian paramilitary soldier standing guard during a surprise check operation in Srinagar, Indian controlled Kashmir.

Felipe Dana for Feature Photography Story, for his series on a madrasa in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Mark J. Terrill for Sports Photography Single Image, for his photo of Paula Badosa, of Spain, viewed through her trophy as she begins to hold it up after defeating Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, in the singles final at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells, Calif.

Ashley Landis for Sports Photography Story, for her coverage of championship baseball in the month of October.
