Best of the East

Best of the East is a monthly gallery that features some of the top photojournalism made by AP staff photographers, freelancers and members based in AP’s 10-state U.S. East region.

This month’s selection of noteworthy images begins with two from Maine photographer Bob Bukaty.  Both beautiful photos, both precise action and both very different all the same.

Boston-based photographer Charlie Krupa documented migrants being driven north to the Canadian border because of the perception, real or perceived, that the age of President Donald Trump means the United States is no longer the destination of the world’s dispossessed.

Charlie was also on hand to photograph the partial solar eclipse as seen from historic Faneuil Hall.

Samsung’s Justin Denison is dwarfed by projections of the company’s Galaxy Note 8, during the phone’s introduction, in New York.

New York staffer Julie Jacobson spent time with teenagers and young men being mentored in Syracuse.

Bill Cosby appeared in court as changes occur to his legal team, causing a delay in his retrial.

A participant becomes shows strong emotion as he becomes a U.S. citizen during a ceremony in New York.

Scuffles broke out in Boston after a “Free Speech” rally was staged by conservative activists and opposed by counter-protestors.

Before the US Open, there is the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. Peak action is beautifully captured by staffer John Minchillo.

Professional baseball and Little League World series is an August mainstay with veteran staffers Gene Puskar and Tony Dejak making the memorable pictures.

Preseason NFL football is another pursuit in August.

The galley ends with another Bob Bukaty image, the first rays of sunlight color the clouds over Mount Katahdin, a newly created national monument in the news.
