Archivist update: Martin Luther King Jr.

This Monday marks the annual American holiday observed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the nonviolent activist and humanitarian leader of the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and helped organize the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. King's "I Have a Dream" speech, which calls for the end of racism in the U.S., was delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial at the march and went on to become the defining speech of the civil rights movement.

Today, we feature photos of Martin Luther King Jr. from the Associated Press photo library that may be less familiar to wide audiences.
